Police departments often recover lost and stolen property and come into possession of property that is seized due to the fact the property was used for, or obtained through illegal activity. Under Massachusetts General Law, property that is turned into a police department and can not be returned to an owner because the owner cannot be identified can be sold. Property that is seized because it was obtained through, or used for certain types of criminal activity can also be sold after a court makes a final determination that it has been legally seized by the police.
The Burlington Police Department sells recovered and seized property through an online auction service called Property Room.
