Traffic

The Burlington Police Traffic Division is a specialized unit that is highly committed to ensuring the Town of Burlington’s overall traffic safety system is at the highest standard possible. The division is comprised of one Traffic Safety Officer, two Traffic Enforcement officers, and one Supervisor. Each officer works in collaboration with other departments within the Town of Burlington to ensure our roadways are safe for commuters. Those travelling through the Town of Burlington should feel safe to do so without fear or intimidation by negligent or reckless operators. The unit accomplishes a safe driving atmosphere through aggressive enforcement, roadway safety education, and by addressing roadway safety hazards and design flaws.

When it comes to addressing traffic safety concerns, some of the options include displaying a speed radar sign, conducting a traffic study to gather more information on the safety concern, and traffic enforcement. The Burlington Police Traffic Division is committed to making sure the roadways are safe, and will do so by using all the available resources to hold that true.

Each Traffic Division personnel holds a National Child Passenger Safety Certification as a Technician (CPS-T). As a CPS-T, our officers have the knowledge and the ability to properly inspect and install various types of car seats. The Traffic Division often holds Child Passenger Safety Checkpoints. These checkpoints allow caretakers to have their car seats inspected or installed on site and without an appointment. We encourage residents to follow the Burlington Police Department’s social media accounts for updated information on checkpoints. If a resident is unable to make it to a checkpoint event or has needs that require immediate attention, an appointment can be made with any officer in the Traffic Division by leaving a message on the traffic line.  Residents who are unable to purchase a car seat may be able to get one through the Burlington Police Department, provided they are available on site.

In addition to Car Seat Checkpoints, the Traffic Division hosts an event called Safety Town prior to the academic year. Safety Town is an educational event designed to teach kindergartners and first graders about bicycle, pedestrian, and school bus safety. It is conducted in partnership with the Burlington Mall and is a fun, immersive event for the kids. This event allows children to ride bikes provided by the Burlington Police Department and walk around as pedestrians in a child-sized town, while completing an obstacle course with stop signs, intersections, crosswalks, and other roadway markings - all while learning about safety. Children are then taught to board, sit on, disembark, and cross the street in front of an actual school bus. Hosting this event at the Burlington Mall allows for a controlled and safe educational environment. The program has been highly successful for over 50 years. For more information on how to register for Safety Town, please check the events tab on the Burlington Mall website.
