Application for Burlington Municipal Employees Credit Union
Complete and return to the Credit Union along with your paystub as proof of employment
Municipal and School employees do NOT contribute to Social Security. As a result, each employee pays into a retirement account based on the hours worked for their position.
If you are a permanent employee, working at least 20 hours per week:
All employees who are regularly scheduled to work at least 20 hours weekly pay into either Middlesex County Retirement or the Massachusetts Teachers’ Retirement System. Your contribution rate is set by state statute and cannot be changed. If you are employed for at least 10 years in a covered position you will earn a pension that you can access when you reach retirement age. This will be based on your age and years of creditable service when you retire.

If you are a temporary or seasonal employee, or regularly work less than 20 hours per week:
All employees who work LESS than 20 hours weekly are enrolled in OBRA, administered by Nationwide. Your contribution is 7.5% of your earnings that is deposited into your Nationwide account. This money can be withdrawn or rolled over into other retirement savings accounts (401(k)s, 403(b)s, other 457 plans, IRAs, etc.) at the end of employment.
All earnings from your Town employment are not reported to Social Security. As such, your Social Security retirement benefits may be affected when you collect your pension through the Windfall Elimination Provision and the Government Pension Offset.
Disability Insurance protects your income if you are out of work due to a non-work related illness or injury.
