When does the annual VA Summary of Benefits letter get mailed?
The VA typically mails it out around June each year.
What if I didn’t receive a letter?
You can call the VA directly at 1-800-827-1000 and request another copy be sent to your home address. Please note that the Assessor’s office in Burlington requires the letter to be dated in June of the current year in order to apply for tax abatements, so be sure to request the appropriate dated summary.
When to Apply for Real Estate Abatement in Burlington:
- The deadline to apply for a real estate abatement in Burlington is October 1st of the current year.
- If you have received an abatement in the past, the Assessor's office will mail you a renewal application.
- If this is your first time applying, please visit or call the Assessor’s office on October 1st to apply.

Vehicle Excise Tax Abatements:
Excise Tax Exemptions:
Chapter 60A, Section 1 of the Massachusetts General Laws provides excise tax exemptions for:
- Non-resident military personnel
- Certain disabled individuals and veterans
- Ex-prisoners of war and their surviving spouses
- Certain charitable organizations

Eligibility for Non-Resident Military Exemption:
Under the Soldiers’ and Sailors' Relief Act (50 USCA S.574 App.), this exemption is available to service members who:
- Are stationed in Massachusetts but are not residents of the state.
- Register their vehicle(s) in Massachusetts for personal (non-business) use.
To qualify, the service member must provide a letter from their commanding officer confirming their non-resident military status. Note that leased vehicles are not eligible for this exemption.
A service member who is a Massachusetts resident but stationed elsewhere is not eligible for this exemption if their registration remains in Massachusetts.
Exemption for Ex-Prisoners of War and Surviving Spouses:
The exemption for the motor vehicle excise tax for ex-prisoners of war and their surviving spouses must be accepted by the city or town for it to apply.
