Burlington Police Uniform Patrol Division
The Uniform Patrol Division is an operational component of the Burlington Police Department. Its main function is to provide all law enforcement patrol and related duties to the citizens of Burlington.
The functional responsibilities of the Uniform Patrol Division include, but are not limited to providing direct and general police services to the public 24 hours per day, seven days per week. These services include, but are not limited to:
- Apprehension of offenders
- Enforcement of all laws and ordinances
- General traffic services
- Identification of criminal offenders and criminal activity
- Preservation of the peace and public order
- Protection of life and property
Command Structure
The Uniform Patrol Division Commander is responsible for the overall operation of the Uniform Patrol Division under the direction of the Chief of Police. The Uniform Patrol Division Commander has divisional authority in matters of operation, policy and discipline and will exercise such lawful directives as are necessary to assure the effective performance of the division. The Uniform Patrol Division Commander shall hold the rank of Captain.
Division Shifts
The Uniform Patrol Division is divided into three Patrol Shifts: 8 am to 4 pm, 4 pm to midnight, and midnight to 8 am. They will be manned with a sufficient number of patrol officers.
Each shift is headed by a Shift Commander holding the rank of Lieutenant. Shift Commanders are responsible for assuring that adequate supervision and uniform personnel are on duty at all times during their respective shifts. Each shift will also have Patrol Supervisors holding the rank of Sergeant. Each shift will normally have two Sergeants. The Shift Supervisor will be responsible for supervision and guidance of shift personnel in the field. During the absence of the Shift Commander, the Shift Supervisor will act as the Commander.
